Product Research: Our Process

At Best Sleep Society, we carefully analyze mattress features to understand how they affect sleep quality. Our research process helps us evaluate comfort, support, and durability. This guide provides insight into how we assess the sleep experience.
Evaluating Comfort and Support
Our marking matrix is a detailed scoring system that evaluates each mattress based on critical aspects like comfort, support, durability, and temperature regulation. Expert sleep testers conduct an extensive analysis that considers various body types and sleep positions, ensuring comprehensive and relevant ratings for a wide audience.
Long-Term Performance Assessment
As mattresses age, they may undergo wear and tear, potentially affecting their initial comfort and support. To address this, our long-term analysis includes feedback from users who have slept on the mattresses for extended periods. This allows us to evaluate how well the products perform in real-world use and whether they maintain their shape, support, and overall quality over time.
Why We Look at Additional Services
In addition to our in-house tests and analysis, we thoroughly evaluate customer service, warranty policies, and setup and delivery ease. These factors play a crucial role in overall consumer satisfaction. A positive experience from purchase to longevity reflects a brand's commitment to quality and customer care, completing our comprehensive product research approach.
All-foam mattresses are a popular choice for many looking to upgrade their bed, and rightfully so. They provide exceptional comfort at a reasonable cost, and typically eliminate motion transfer better than their hybrid or spring counterparts. Though, with several all-foam options on the market, it can be difficult to choose! If you’ve been shopping around, chances are you’ve encountered the Endy Mattress and the Douglas Mattress. Both are wonderfully Canadian-made foam mattresses. However, our team’s testing has uncovered some important distinctions between them that may surprise you. HINT: it makes Endy the clear winner. Which Mattress Should You Buy?

When evaluating each mattress on comfort and performance, breathability, and motion transfer, the Endy Mattress continued to stand out. With high rankings across the board, this contender proves to be both comfortable and supportive. It ensures optimal spinal support in every sleeping position while cradling sleepers in luxurious cloud-like comfort. It also gained favour among hot sleepers, with its breathable foam creating a cool sleeping environment. Meanwhile, co-sleepers love that it eliminates motion transfer, so that they don’t feel their bedmate rolling around in the night.

While the Douglas Mattress has a lower price point, we found the materials used to be less durable, resulting in quicker wear and tear - not ideal for a long-term investment in your sleep! Upon analysis, it also disappointed in terms of support and breathability. Many sleepers found it too soft, raising questions about effective spinal support, and its foam has limited airflow, which translates into a warmer sleeping experience. Another downside is Douglas’s return policy. It stipulates that you must wait 21 days to complete your return and also rewrap it in plastic for the return to be accepted. You may find this to be a bit of a hassle, especially if you decide quickly that this mattress doesn’t meet your expectations.

With all that factored in, the Endy Mattress is our clear top pick for the higher quality and overall superior results when comparing these two.

The Endy Mattress

1. Endy Comfort Foam Layer

As the name suggests, this layer was designed with comfort top of mind. It cradles your body gently to relieve pressure points without sacrificing on support. In addition, open-cell technology provides airflow allowing body heat to dissipate easily, rather than lingering while you’re trying to doze off. Lastly, it’s infused with cooling gel for a comfortable feel.

2. Transition Layer

This layer of responsive polyfoam holds you up and supports your back, so you can sink into sleep without sinking into your mattress. It’s also responsible for eliminating motion transfer, so you don’t feel your partner’s movements throughout the night.

3. Support Foam

Offering a solid base for the entirety of the mattress, the bottom layer is made of high-density foam to provide a stable base.

Douglas Mattress Foam Layer Construction

1. Cooling Gel Foam Layer

This cooling foam top layer offers an alternative to traditional memory foam, which tends to retain heat.

(Fun fact: Did you know that cooling gel only creates a cool feeling when you first lay down, but won’t maintain it through the night? While it’s a great feature, the most important thing to look for in a foam mattress is open-cell technology, which allows heat to escape the mattress for a consistently cool feeling all night.)

2. Middle Layer

The middle layer mimics a natural latex foam in support and responsiveness, providing what you’d expect from an all-foam mattress.

3. Motion Isolation Support Foam Layer

The bottom layer is designed to reduce motion transfer, although it doesn’t fully eliminate it – more on that later.

Douglas Mattress Foam Layer Construction

You’ve probably noticed the Endy and Douglas mattresses are each constructed of three foam layers – one of their predominant similarities. However, our testing found the materials in the Douglas to be less durable against long-term compression and abrasion, so they’ll break down faster over time. Douglas’ lower price point likely reflects the lower quality materials used in each layer.

They’ve also ranked themselves at a 6.5 on the firmness scale, although through our testing, we found the Douglas Mattress closely matched a 6/10 rating. We attribute this softer feel to the Elastex® Foam, which feels similar to latex. Studies have shown that a truly medium-firm mattress improves sleep quality and may help in preventing back aches. If a mattress is too soft, your hips and shoulders will sink into it, causing unfavorable spine positioning – ouch.

On the other hand, we found the Endy Mattress to be the perfect level of firmness to help you maintain a neutral spine throughout the night. We can tell the materials used are durable and high-quality, making it a worthwhile investment for your sleep. Its Comfort Foam relieves pressure points and provides a cool sleep surface for a pleasant sensation as you’re drifting off. For these reasons, Endy is the better choice to have a good sleep for years to come.

Comfort

Author’s Pick
The Endy Mattress
The Endy Mattress meets the criteria you’re looking for in a comfortable mattress. It offers that perfect level of support to keep your spine neutral and prevent you from sinking into the foam, while still feeling comfortable enough you’ll want to lie on it all day. It relieves pressure points, so where your hips and shoulders meet the mattress, you won’t get that “digging in” sensation that leads to tossing and turning all night. All of this adds up to a deeper sleep.

Douglas Original
In comparison, the Douglas Mattress has a softer surface, which means less support for the spine and potentially more back aches. Offered at a bargain price point, the materials used are less durable and will not hold up over time. While the Douglas Mattress provides some comfort, many sleepers have found it doesn’t hit the perfect balance of firmness.

Motion Transfer

The motion transfer refers to how much motion on one side of the mattress is likely to be felt by the person sleeping on the other side. While all-foam mattresses tend to be better at alleviating motion transfer overall, between these two foam options, the Endy Mattress came out ahead of the Douglas Mattress. It eliminates motion transfer well, so if the person (or pet) you’re sharing a bed with moves during the night, it won’t disrupt your beauty sleep. With the Douglas, there was still motion that could disturb your rest, especially if you tend to be a lighter sleeper.

The Endy Mattress
We found the Endy Mattress had the strongest results for motion isolation. Its transitional layer of foam effectively absorbs any movement, stopping it in its tracks before it travels across the bed. Almost no movement can be felt on other areas of the mattress, so light sleepers can rest easy.

Our testing shows the Douglas Mattress provides some motion transfer elimination, as you would expect from a foam mattress. Those sharing a bed with a partner will still feel some motion transfer though, which may result in an interrupted sleep.

Breathability

If you consider yourself a hot sleeper, breathability should be a top factor in your mattress buying decision. A mattress’s breathability indicates its ability to release your body heat, minimizing those dreaded night sweats. To test this between these two mattresses, we conducted a standard airflow test. We found the foam used in the Endy Mattress had 64 times more airflow than the foam in the Douglas, making it the definitive winner. This makes sense, as the top layer of the Endy Mattress uses open-cell technology to enhance airflow, so body heat is well circulated. It also contains cooling gel for a crisp feel when you initially lay down. By contrast, the lower airflow in the Douglas Mattress leads to a warmer sleeping environment – bad news for hot sleepers.

Conclusion

After testing both the Endy Mattress and the Douglas Mattress, the Endy Mattress came out on top as the better all-foam mattress.

While the mattresses may share a similar all-foam structure, the Endy Mattress offers superior benefits and overall quality based on the criteria we looked at. Its firmness is better suited to provide proper spine support, its open-cell foam delivers far better breathability, and it completely eliminates motion transfer!

By contrast, the Douglas Mattress may be a bit too soft for your back, the foam isn’t as breathable, and it didn’t eliminate motion transfer as well. Its lower price tag may be appealing, but because it’s less durable, it may need to be replaced sooner.

And it’s not just us who love the Endy: to date, 31,000 verified customers have given the Endy Mattress an almost-perfect 4.9/5-star rating, whereas the Douglas received a 4.7 average rating from 18,000 customers.

One final factor worth mentioning is customer service, which is crucial to ensure your mattress buying experience is as stress-free as possible. Endy gets this right with strong delivery options: the expected shipping time for mattresses is only 1-3 days in most major cities, and same-day delivery is available within the Greater Toronto Area. They also have an exceptional customer service team! This is obvious because their Google Business score is 4.7 out of 5 stars, and many reviews mention incredible service from the Customer Care Specialists.

Douglas, however, reportedly often has shipping delays and is harder to get a hold of in the case of any issues. While it has an extended trial period of 365 days, returns are actually only permitted after night 21 of trying the mattress. The mattress must also be rewrapped in its original plastic to return, or a new cover must be purchased for the pickup process.
