Comfort & Performance
Douglas claims this is their most “premium”, cooling mattress to date, however, our sleep testers found the comfort to be quite underwhelming. For a higher price point than the Douglas Original, we expected the mattress to offer more comfort.
Although they claim to be medium-firm (and only offer one firmness option) the mattress was on the softer side and felt medium-soft. The edge support was significantly lacking, and the pressure relief was nothing out of the ordinary, similar to the Douglas Original.
The enveloping feeling of the mattress was uncomfortable to some of our sleep testers as they disliked the sinking, over-contouring feel. Douglas Summit could be a tad bit firmer, and supportive to cater to a wider range of sleeping positions.
Motion Transfer
The goal of a premium mattress is to have uninterrupted, quality sleep, however, Douglas Summit’s lack of motion isolation may prevent you from that. Our tests revealed that there was significant motion transfer when the sleep testers got in and out of bed, indicating you (or your partner or pet) will experience disturbances during the tosses and turns, or getting out of bed.
Breathability
Although Douglas Summit combines “triple-cooling action” for more temperature regulation, the breathability of the mattress is somewhat unclear to the consumers. Our sleep testers felt the mattress lacked airflow, and there was not a significant cooling effect, even with the mattress construction catering to it. The sleep testers experienced some discomfort as the mattress lacked moisture-wicking properties.
Conclusion
Although the Douglas Summit may offer a 365-night trial and 20 years of warranty, it is safe to assume the mattress will lose its charm way before that. With the comfort being compromised by the medium-soft feel and high bounce, and the edge support being diminished over time during our sleep trials, we would not recommend this mattress to back, stomach, and heavy sleepers.
The underwhelming levels of motion isolation and breathability indicated that Douglas Summit will not guarantee uninterrupted sleep, be it waking up from your partner’s (or pet’s) tosses and turns or feeling uncomfortable with sweat and heat.
For consumers looking for a luxurious mattress on the market offering a medium-firm, supportive feel with impressive cooling and motion isolation, we recommend The Casper.
