Product Research: Our Process

At Best Sleep Society, we carefully analyze mattress features to understand how they affect sleep quality. Our research process helps us evaluate comfort, support, and durability. This guide provides insight into how we assess the sleep experience.
Evaluating Comfort and Support
Our marking matrix is a detailed scoring system that evaluates each mattress based on critical aspects like comfort, support, durability, and temperature regulation. Expert sleep testers conduct an extensive analysis that considers various body types and sleep positions, ensuring comprehensive and relevant ratings for a wide audience.
Long-Term Performance Assessment
As mattresses age, they may undergo wear and tear, potentially affecting their initial comfort and support. To address this, our long-term analysis includes feedback from users who have slept on the mattresses for extended periods. This allows us to evaluate how well the products perform in real-world use and whether they maintain their shape, support, and overall quality over time.
Why We Look at Additional Services
In addition to our in-house tests and analysis, we thoroughly evaluate customer service, warranty policies, and setup and delivery ease. These factors play a crucial role in overall consumer satisfaction. A positive experience from purchase to longevity reflects a brand's commitment to quality and customer care, completing our comprehensive product research approach.

Douglas Original: Is It Worth The Hype?

Our Verdict

Douglas Original is Douglas’s best-selling mattress that advertises a medium-firm feel and ample cooling. I wanted to put these claims to the test, as during my research, I found many customer reviews that complained about the lack of firmness and cooling on the mattress. For $799 for a queen size, the price is comparable to Endy and Silk & Snow’s all-foam models, which have hundreds of 5-star reviews complimenting their firmness levels, comfort, and cooling.

Overall, I did not find the Douglas was exceptionally better than similar competitors, and found this mattress to lack bounce, which was consistent with other online reviews, such as mattressreviews.ca. With more peace of mind, you can invest in The Endy, which is not just loved by many Canadians but also impressed us with its high-quality construction.

Purchasing and Returns

You can purchase the Douglas Original from the Douglas website. Unfortunately, you cannot try the mattress out before purchasing, as Douglas is not sold at any retail locations. The mattress takes a few days to get delivered, and you get a 365-night trial period within which you can return the mattress if you are not satisfied with it. A common complaint from customers was that the mattress was too soft, therefore they had to return it. While this Douglas Original Review mostly focuses on the performance of the mattress, we believe it’s important to evaluate the entire shopping experience.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The Douglas Original arrived at my doorstep in a compact box that was pretty beat up when I received it.. This mattress took 30-40 minutes to expand to its full form, but did not feel stable enough to sleep on the first night, so I decided to give it 48 hours. In our Spring 2025 tests, the Douglas Original had an off-gassing-like smell for 19 days. We did not measure VOC emissions from the mattress, so it is likely the mattress stopped off-gassing earlier, if at all. However, if you are sensitive to smell, this is something to keep in mind.

Comfort

The entire Douglas mattress range offers a pretty similar construction, with the Douglas Original having slightly less foam than its pricier alternatives. Personally, I do not like the feeling of being enveloped or cradled on a mattress, and when I slept on the Douglas, I could certainly relate to common customer complaints about how soft this mattress was.

Firmness

This mattress has a medium-firm feel. As a 127lb woman, I did observe deeper sinking on the Douglas than on similar mattresses, like the Endy Original.  If you’re like me and prefer a firm mattress, consider Endy or Silk & Snow, as they both offer firm versions of their all-foam mattress.

Motion Transfer

Memory foams are usually praised for motion isolation, however, Douglas Original did not particularly excel in this area. During the tests we conducted in our sleep lab, there seemed to be significant movement in the water vessel when the sleep tester got in and out of bed. If you share your bed with someone, you may want to look at the Endy Original, which offers significantly better motion isolation.

Cooling

Some of the Douglas Original customers have pointed out that the mattress is not as cooling as they hoped. We retested the Douglas Original for heat dissipation in Spring 2025, and found that it retained more heat after 30 minutes of sitting on the mattress in comparison to similar mattresses. If you’re a hot sleeper, consider looking at the Endy Original, Silk & Snow S&S, or The Casper for strong cooling capabilities.

Edge Support

The Douglas Original‘s edge support wasn’t as strong as I hoped. There was about 6-7” of sinkage, taking me down all the way to the foundational foam, and causing an unbalanced feel.

Sinkage and Responsiveness

As I mentioned, I don’t like the feeling of cradling in a mattress, and this feeling is common for memory foam mattresses.. When testing the Douglas Original, I found that I sank into the foam and wasn’t able to move as easily on the mattress’s surfaces as I did with The Endy or The Casper. As the Douglas Original mattress also lacks bounce, I did not find a method to minimize the sinking effect. When we dropped a 5lb ball onto the mattress, it only bounced once, and a few centimetres above the mattress’ surface, before settling.

How does it suit different sleeping positions?

Side Sleepers

The Douglas Original can be soft enough for most side sleepers who prefer a cushiony feel. That being said, those who dislike the “sinking in” feeling may still find it uncomfortable.

Back Sleepers

Heavier back sleepers may prefer a firm mattress to a medium-firm mattress. Our back sleeping testers also reported they felt like their lumbar region sank deeper than they were used to.However, for lightweight back sleepers, the Douglas Original can be comfortable enough.

Stomach Sleepers

Our stomach sleeper testers called out sinkage in their hip region as a point of unfavourability more than any other sleeping type. However, it may be suitable for lightweight sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers may find the Douglas Original difficult to sleep, due to the enveloping feel and lack of bounce. Lightweight combination sleepers may find they can move easily, but bigger bodies may feel stuck when they try to move throughout the night.

Lightweight Sleepers

For lightweight sleepers, the Douglas Original can provide adequate support and comfort.

Heavy People

Heavier testers sank deeper into this mattress than their lighter counterparts. We suggest considering alternatives like the Endy Original Firm.

Should You Buy the Douglas Original?

The overall performance of the Douglas Original did not impress us over similarly priced all-foam mattresses. The mattress did not showcase outstanding scores across cooling, responsiveness, or motion isolation, whereas these were observed for other all-foam options like The Endy, The Casper, and Silk & Snow S&S.

I’ve compared Endy vs Douglas, and found differences in performance, with The Endy exceeding expectations in comfort, motion isolation, edge support, and breathability. We’d recommend considering The Endy as they suit a wide range of sleepers and are available in multiple firmness levels.
