Product Research: Our Process

At Best Sleep Society, we carefully analyze mattress features to understand how they affect sleep quality. Our research process helps us evaluate comfort, support, and durability. This guide provides insight into how we assess the sleep experience.
Evaluating Comfort and Support
Our marking matrix is a detailed scoring system that evaluates each mattress based on critical aspects like comfort, support, durability, and temperature regulation. Expert sleep testers conduct an extensive analysis that considers various body types and sleep positions, ensuring comprehensive and relevant ratings for a wide audience.
Long-Term Performance Assessment
As mattresses age, they may undergo wear and tear, potentially affecting their initial comfort and support. To address this, our long-term analysis includes feedback from users who have slept on the mattresses for extended periods. This allows us to evaluate how well the products perform in real-world use and whether they maintain their shape, support, and overall quality over time.
Why We Look at Additional Services
In addition to our in-house tests and analysis, we thoroughly evaluate customer service, warranty policies, and setup and delivery ease. These factors play a crucial role in overall consumer satisfaction. A positive experience from purchase to longevity reflects a brand's commitment to quality and customer care, completing our comprehensive product research approach.

Douglas Summit: Is It As Premium As They Claim?

Our Verdict

The Douglas Summit is advertised as the "premium choice" out of the brand's Douglas mattress range, but for $500 more for a queen size compared to the Douglas Original, the only significant difference we observed was 2" of additional foam layers. Looking at the douglas summit mattress construction, it is evident that Douglas has used the same memory foam layers as their base model — so customers may be better off saving $500 by purchasing the Douglas Original instead.

While the 365 night trial and the 20-year warranty may entice you to invest in this summit mattress, the douglas summit did not outperform similar mattresses from its competitors in our douglas summit mattress review testing. Even with 2" more foam layers, common customer complaints include diminishing pressure relief, foul odour, lack of cooling features, and lack of motion isolation — as reflected in the reviews below. As a Canadian mattress option in this price range, there are considerably better alternatives available.

Instead, I would suggest The Casper Mattress, which performed better across all our tests in a similar price range. This Summit mattress review will walk you through the full picture so you can make a confident, informed decision.

Purchasing and Returns

You can purchase the Douglas Summit from the Douglas website or their Edmonton store. Unfortunately, as retail locations are limited, not everyone will be able to test out this Douglas mattress before buying — a notable drawback for a new mattress at this price point. The mattress takes a few days to get delivered, and you receive a 365 night sleep trial within which you can return the summit mattress if you are not satisfied with it.

While the 365 night trial provides some peace of mind, we recommend using a mattress protector and optionally a pillow protector from night one to keep the mattress in returnable condition during the trial. A duvet cover and cotton sheet set to complement the purchase are worth sourcing separately, as the Douglas Summit does not ship with a bedding bundle — unlike comparable Canadian mattress options from brands like Endy and Silk & Snow.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The Douglas Summit arrived in a compact box, and judging by the condition of the box, the delivery handling left something to be desired. Upon unboxing, this foam mattress took about 15–20 minutes to expand to its full 12-inch form. As it did not feel sturdy enough to sleep on immediately, I gave it a full 48 hours — longer than most competing mattresses in this category require.

One experience I shared with many customers was the strong off gassing odour from this new mattress that took 16 full days to fully disappear. This is a notably long off gassing period — especially concerning given the 365 night trial window. Compared to other mattresses we’ve tested from brands like Casper, Endy, and Silk & Snow, the Douglas Summit mattress was underwhelming from the very first impression. Placing the mattress in a well-ventilated room is strongly advised during the off gassing period, and using a mattress protector immediately will help manage any residual odour absorption into the mattress cover.

Construction

The Douglas Summit is an all foam mattress built with premium foam layers — essentially the same memory foam architecture as the Douglas Original, with 2″ of additional depth across the upper foam layers. While Douglas positions this as a “premium” foam mattress, the douglas summit mattress construction reflects a modest material upgrade that does not translate into meaningful performance gains.

1. Douglas CoolSense® Cover (Machine Washable Cover)

The douglas summit’s cover — the Douglas CoolSense Cover — is a machine washable cover made with cryofusion cooling nanofibres designed for temperature regulation and moisture management. The cryofusion cooling nanofibres in the Douglas CoolSense Cover are intended to provide surface-level cooling, but as our testing revealed, the cooling materials in this mattress cover alone are insufficient for sustained temperature regulation — particularly for hot sleepers. A notable customer complaint is that the mattress cover pills relatively easily with regular use, undermining the premium positioning of the Douglas Summit.

2. 2.5″ ecoLight® Cooling Gel Foam + Polar® Temperature Balancing

The ecolight cooling gel foam layer is the Douglas Summit’s primary cooling gel foam technology — a cooling gel memory foam designed to draw heat away from the sleep surface through polar temperature balancing. The polar temperature balancing system in combination with the ecolight cooling gel foam is meant to deliver extra cooling technology beyond the cooling materials in the machine washable cover. However, the polar temperature balancing and ecolight cooling gel foam combination still proved insufficient to keep the sleep surface cool in our 30-minute body heat tests. For hot sleepers who sleep hot, the cooling features here are more marketing than substance.

3. 2.5″ Premium Elastex® Foam

The premium elastex foam is the body-contouring memory foam comfort layer of the douglas summit mattress. This premium elastex foam is the same formulation used in the Douglas Original — just 0.5″ thicker. While the premium elastex foam provides some body contouring and pressure relief, it contributes to the enveloping, slow-recovery memory foam feel that many customers find frustrating. The gel infused foam and premium elastex foam together represent the full douglas summit cooling gel foam comfort stack.

4. 7″ Motion Isolation Support Foam

The motion isolation support foam base is the foundational foam layer of the douglas summit mattress — a dense 7″ base designed to deliver the bed’s strong support and structure for the layers above. This motion isolation support foam provides the all foam mattress’s primary stability, though our testing found it underwhelming for motion isolation in practice. Unlike a true hybrid mattress with independently wrapped coils, the all foam mattress construction of the douglas summit limits how effectively the motion isolation support foam can contain movement across the sleep surface.

Comfort

The Douglas Summit may have 2″ of additional memory foam height compared to other douglas mattresses, but it did not provide any significant improvement in comfort in our testing. The bed offers pressure relief at a basic level for lightweight sleepers, but average weight sleepers and above will find the douglas summit falls short of the pressure point relief and adaptive support that similarly priced mattresses from Casper or Endy deliver.

For the price of this upgrade, I would suggest considering alternatives like The Casper, which features a knitted cover that genuinely enhances the overall sleep experience — a meaningful comfort difference that the douglas summit feel simply does not replicate. The douglas summit mattress bed offers pressure relief that is adequate for basic use, but not the deep, consistent pressure point relief you would expect from a “premium” foam mattress in this price tier.

Firmness

The Douglas Summit scores 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale — leaning toward a medium firm feel that in practice reads considerably softer. The medium firm mattress positioning is broadly consistent across the douglas mattress range, with the douglas summit offering the same medium firm profile as the Douglas Original — just with more memory foam depth that, for most sleeping positions, translates into more sinkage rather than more support.

As a 127lb woman, I felt myself sinking into the memory foam when lying on the douglas summit mattress, which I did not enjoy. The Douglas Summit feel will disappoint anyone expecting a truly firm mattress experience.

Motion Transfer

During our mattress review sleep tests for the Douglas Summit, we noticed measurable movement in the water vessel as the sleep tester got in and out of bed — suggesting motion transfer on the sleep surface is not well isolated. The motion isolation support foam base does absorb some movement, but as an all foam mattress without pocketed coils, the douglas summit lacks the mechanical motion isolation advantage of a true hybrid mattress design.

If you share your bed with a partner, pet, or child, the motion transfer limitations of the douglas summit mattress are a real concern for sleeping positions that involve any movement. My recommendation is to look at alternatives that offer meaningfully better motion isolation, such as The Casper mattress, which outperformed the Douglas Summit in our motion isolation testing by a significant margin.

Cooling

Although the douglas summit mattress felt cool to the touch initially — thanks to the cryofusion cooling nanofibres in the Douglas CoolSense Cover and the polar temperature balancing of the ecolight cooling gel foam — the cooling features proved short-lived under real conditions. After 30 minutes of lying on the mattress in our Spring 2025 testing, the sleep surface temperature had climbed to 24.7°C — a poor result for a foam mattress that prominently markets its cooling gel foam and cooling materials.

For hot sleepers who sleep hot, the Douglas Summit’s cooling gel memory foam and polar temperature balancing system are simply not effective enough to deliver a consistently cool sleep surface through the night. The body heat generated by an average sleeper overwhelms the cooling materials relatively quickly. If cooling features and temperature regulation are a priority, The Casper mattress — with its AirScape technology-backed foam layers — delivers meaningfully better extra cooling technology and genuine temperature regulation at a comparable price.

Edge Support

The Douglas Summit does not show significant differences in edge support compared to other Douglas models — a disappointing finding given its premium pricing. When testing the mattress by sitting on the perimeter, I sank about 7 inches deep and slid off the mattress easily. When lying closer to the edge, I observed a similar imbalance. There is no meaningful good edge support to speak of here — the all foam mattress construction offers no reinforced perimeter, and the bed’s strong support that the brand implies through its marketing simply does not materialize at the edges.

For side sleepers who drift toward the edge of their mattress, or for couples using the full sleep surface width, the weak edge support of the Douglas Summit progressively shrinks usable sleeping space — a limitation that compounds over time as the foam layers compress further at the perimeter.

Sinkage and Responsiveness

One common disadvantage of the Douglas Summit — consistent across the broader Douglas mattress range — is the enveloping feeling you experience when getting in and out of bed, creating a sensation of being “stuck.” The Douglas Summit feel is characteristic of dense, slow-recovery memory foam: it cradles deeply but struggles to release quickly when shifting sleeping positions, which can disrupt sleep for active sleepers.

As Douglas models across the range have less bounce than competing foam mattress options, the cradling sleep surface may frustrate average weight sleepers who move frequently during the night. The Douglas Summit lacks the responsive rebound of a true hybrid mattress and falls behind comparable all foam mattress options from Casper and Endy in responsiveness testing.

How does it suit different sleeping positions?

Side Sleepers

The Douglas Summit is soft enough to provide comfort for side sleepers who prefer a cushiony sleep surface — and lightweight sleepers on their side will find the memory foam contouring adequate. However, heavyweight side sleepers will feel the sinkage more prominently than their lighter counterparts, and the lack of good edge support limits safe use of the full mattress width for side sleepers who drift toward the perimeter. Both the shoulders and hips may experience pressure point relief concerns for average weight sleepers and above.

Back Sleepers

Heavier back sleepers may prefer a firm mattress over the medium firm Douglas Summit — the memory foam depth creates more sinkage than proper spinal alignment demands for most back sleepers of average to heavier body weight. For lightweight back sleepers, the douglas summit mattress can be comfortable enough, though The Casper or Casper Dawn Extra Firm both outperform the summit mattress for back sleepers seeking a reliable firm mattress with stronger motion isolation and cooling features.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleeping on the Douglas Summit exposes its most significant weakness: sinkage in the hip region. Our stomach sleepers testers flagged this more than any other sleeping positions type. Average weight stomach sleepers will struggle to maintain spine neutrally aligned positioning on the soft memory foam layers, and heavyweight sleepers should avoid this mattress for stomach sleeping entirely. The Douglas Summit is simply not built for the hip support that consistent stomach sleeping demands.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers may find the Douglas Summit difficult to navigate, due to the enveloping memory foam feel and lack of bounce across sleeping positions. Lightweight sleepers may find movement manageable, but average weight sleepers and heavier bodies will feel stuck when transitioning sleeping positions throughout the night — a direct consequence of the Douglas Summit’s slow-recovery premium foam layers.

Lightweight Sleepers

For lightweight sleepers, the Douglas Summit can provide adequate support and comfort across most sleeping positions. The ecolight cooling gel foam comfort layer does deliver some bed offers pressure relief benefit for lighter bodies, and the douglas summit feel is pleasant for those who actively enjoy the deep cradling sensation of dense memory foam.

Heavy People

Heavier testers sank deeper into the Douglas Summit mattress than their lighter counterparts — worsening both the edge support and sinkage issues we documented. Heavyweight sleepers should strongly consider alternatives that offer durable, budget-friendly firm mattress support that the Douglas Summit cannot match. The all foam mattress construction simply cannot sustain the structural integrity that heavyweight sleepers need over time.

Should You Buy the Douglas Summit?

Although the Douglas Summit is more expensive than the Douglas Original and Douglas Alpine, our douglas summit mattress review testing did not identify a performance improvement that justifies the increased price. The douglas summit compares poorly to similarly priced canadian mattress options on cooling, motion isolation, edge support, and responsiveness — the metrics that most meaningfully affect long-term sleep quality.

The 365 night sleep trial and 20-year warranty are genuinely positive features. But a long trial period is only as valuable as the mattress it accompanies. If you are looking for a foam mattress in a similar price range, there are considerably better options that offer distinct performance advantages. The Casper features AirScape extra cooling technology for superior temperature regulation and is an excellent option for heavyweight sleepers seeking a firm mattress with a real bed’s strong support. Both outperformed the Douglas Summit across our full testing criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Douglas Summit a good mattress?
If you’re looking for an average full-foam mattress, the Douglas Summit can be adequate. However, in our mattress review testing, the Summit mattress underperformed on cooling features, motion isolation, and edge support.
Can I sleep on my Douglas Summit mattress right away?
It is best to wait 48-72 hours before sleeping on the Douglas Summit to mitigate any off-gassing that may occur and to ensure the mattress is expanded well enough.
Is the Douglas Summit upgrade worth it?
In my opinion, no, as there is a significant price difference, but there is no substantial improvement in the areas of performance we evaluated. Customers are better served by investing the $500 price difference into a higher-performing Canadian mattress from a competing brand.
Is the Douglas mattress firm or soft?
The Douglas Summit has a medium-firm feel. Average weight sleepers will likely experience more sinkage than the medium firm feel description implies. If a genuinely firm mattress is your preferred sleeping position requirement, the Douglas Summit mattress will likely disappoint.
Is the Douglas mattress good for back pain?
The Douglas summit provides basic pressure point relief and some bed offers pressure relief benefit for lightweight back sleepers. However, the soft memory foam sinkage can undermine proper spinal alignment for average weight sleepers and heavier individuals — potentially worsening rather than relieving back pain over time. Back sleepers with existing pain should consider a firm mattress from Casper or Endy for more reliable spine neutrally aligned support.
