Avocado Mattress Review
Product Research: Our Process
The Avocado Mattress: Is It Green Enough?
Our Verdict
The Avocado green does use genuinely high-quality organic materials — including GOLS certified organic latex, certified organic cotton, and GOTS certified organic wool — but in the mattress industry, premium natural materials alone do not guarantee premium performance. As our certified sleep science coach reviewers confirmed in testing, this Avocado green mattress under delivers on pressure relief, motion transfer management, and cooling for its price point. For Canadians seeking a true eco-friendly mattress with certified organic materials, there are more affordable and better-performing organic mattresses available.

Purchasing and Returns
There is a minimum 30-day trial before returns are accepted, with returns possible within the 365-night trial (conditions apply). The 25 year limited warranty is a genuine strength of the Avocado green purchase — few mattresses in the mattress industry offer a 25 year limited warranty of this length, including for their pillow top model and standard Avocado mattress configurations. When replacing your old mattress, the trial period does provide reasonable reassurance. A mattress protector is recommended from night one to preserve the organic cotton cover and protect your warranty coverage.
Unboxing and First Impressions
The Avocado Green mattress mattress arrives compressed and plastic-wrapped at your doorstep. After unboxing, this latex hybrid mattress took about 4–5 hours to expand to its full 13-inch form — notably longer than most mattresses in the organic mattresses category — and another two days to feel stable enough for testing.
The Avocado green’s use of organic dunlop latex and certified organic wool means the new mattress has a natural, earthy scent rather than the chemical off-gassing odour associated with polyurethane foams — a meaningful advantage for indoor air quality and those sensitive to polyurethane foams-based smells. This is one of the few genuine first-impression advantages of the Avocado mattress over conventional memory foam or polyurethane foams-based latex hybrids.
Construction

The Avocado Green Mattress is marketed as a premium luxury organic mattress built from domestic and imported materials that meet the USDA’s National Organic Program standards. The interior filling materials combine organic dunlop latex, certified organic wool, and pocketed coils — a construction that distinguishes the Avocado green from memory foam or polyurethane foams-based alternatives. However, the Avocado mattress has only three primary visible layers — notably simpler than what the price might lead you to expect.
It’s also worth noting that the Avocado green website was not fully transparent about all interior filling materials at the time of this mattress review — when we cut open the mattress for our analysis, we were able to confirm the layer breakdown below. Our certified sleep science coach team used this approach to ensure the most accurate Avocado green mattress review possible.
1. 2″ Quilted Cover (Organic Cotton Cover / GOTS Certified Organic Cotton)
The organic cotton cover is made from GOTS certified organic cotton — certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (Global Organic Textile Standard) — providing a soft, breathable entire mattress surface free from polyurethane foams or synthetic treatments. The certified organic cotton organic cotton cover is naturally hypoallergenic and contributes to better indoor air quality compared to conventional memory foam mattress covers. The GOTS certified organic wool within this quilted layer acts as a natural wool fiber fire retardant — providing fire protection without the polyurethane foams-derived chemical flame retardants found in standard latex mattress options. The certified organic wool also provides natural temperature regulation, though as our cooling tests revealed, this natural wool fiber layer alone is insufficient for sustained sleep cool performance. The Avocado luxury organic pillow top version adds extra cushioning here, giving the pillow top model a notably softer initial feel.
2. 8″ Pocket Coils (Pocketed Coils)
The pocketed coils system provides foundational height and responsive sleeping positions support for the entire mattress. These pocketed coils are individually wrapped — like most latex hybrids in the premium segment — providing basic motion transfer dampening and structural integrity. However, compared to the zoned coil systems found in better-performing latex hybrid mattress alternatives, the Avocado green’s pocketed coils are uniform and do not deliver targeted support across different sleeping positions. Unlike a true zoned organic latex hybrid mattress, this limits the Avocado green mattress performance for back and stomach sleepers who need more focused lumbar support.
3. 1″ Natural Latex Layer (Organic Dunlop Latex / GOLS Certified Organic Latex)
The latex layer of the Avocado green is made from GOLS certified organic latex — certified under the Global Organic Latex Standard — processed using the dunlop latex method. Organic dunlop latex is denser and firmer than Talalay natural latex, making it well-suited for a firm mattress feel. The GOLS certified organic certification confirms the natural latex foam is free from polyurethane foams, synthetic additives, and domestic and imported materials of questionable origin. However, at just 1″ of latex foam, the latex layer is relatively thin — which contributes to the inadequate pressure relief we observed during testing. Most mattresses in the luxury organic mattress category feature significantly thicker certified organic latex comfort layers, making the Avocado green’s natural latex depth a notable limitation at this price point.
Comfort
The Avocado Green Mattress was not as comfortable as I expected for a luxury organic mattress at nearly $4,900 CAD for a queen. The natural latex and pocketed coils weren’t as plush — or as firm, for that matter — as I’ve experienced with other organic mattresses. The pressure relief was lacking across most sleeping positions, and the overall relaxation the Avocado green provided fell short of what the price implies.
The dunlop latex latex foam felt squishy rather than supportively responsive — a quality difference that our certified sleep science coach reviewers noted consistently. While the GOLS certified organic latex is genuinely high quality as a raw organic material, the thin 1″ latex layer does not provide the sustained pressure relief that combination sleepers, back and stomach sleepers, or light sleepers sharing a bed typically need from a luxury organic mattress investment.
Firmness
The Avocado Green Mattress is available in two firmness options: medium and firm. We rated the medium at 5.5/10 and the firm at 6.5/10 on our firmness scale — both softer than their descriptions imply. Even the firm mattress version did not offer the same medium firm feel we observed in comparable organic mattresses such as the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress, which scores 7/10.
The pillow top model — the Avocado luxury organic mattress — skews even softer, adding a pillow top quilted layer that makes the Avocado green more suitable for side sleepers who prefer a softer mattress experience. The standard Avocado mattress without the pillow top is the more supportive option, but even this version feels softer than most mattresses positioned as medium firm in the organic mattresses market. Unless you’re a side sleeper or lightweight sleeper, you may find this Avocado mattress too soft for your sleeping positions needs.
Motion Transfer
The Avocado Green Mattress did not impress in its motion transfer management. We noticed significant movement across the entire mattress as we tested — potentially causing light sleepers who share their bed to experience sleep disturbances. For a latex hybrid mattress at this price point, the motion transfer performance was below expectations.
The pocketed coils do provide some motion transfer dampening — a structural advantage over pure memory foam or polyurethane foams-based designs — but the organic dunlop latex comfort layer does not add the additional motion transfer absorption layer found in better-engineered latex hybrids. Light sleepers who share a bed will likely find the Avocado green mattress motion performance unsatisfactory compared to organic mattresses alternatives like the Silk & Snow Organic.

Cooling
The Avocado Green Mattress does not have any specific cooling properties and is not considered a cooling natural mattress. There are no dedicated design elements — no GOLS certified organic gel infusion, no ventilated transition foam, no phase-change materials — to enhance airflow through the entire mattress beyond the natural breathability of the organic dunlop latex and certified organic wool natural wool fiber layer.
As a result, the surface temperature of the Avocado green was considerably higher than most mattresses we’ve tested. This may cause overheating for hot sleepers — and if you tend to sleep cool as a priority, the Avocado green mattress will likely disappoint. The GOTS certified organic wool does provide passive temperature regulation as a natural wool fiber layer, but this is insufficient for dedicated hot sleeper needs, especially compared to the active cooling systems in the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress or Hush Graph-Iced.

Edge Support
The Avocado Green edge support is one of the better aspects of this natural mattress. The Avocado green edge support held up reasonably well during testing — we did not experience significant slipping or falling off the edges while sitting or lying closer to the perimeter. The pocketed coils running to the perimeter of the entire mattress contribute to this structural stability at the edges.
That said, Avocado green edge support is the one meaningful performance highlight in an otherwise underwhelming Avocado green mattress review. It is not enough on its own to justify the price premium over better-performing organic mattresses alternatives.

Sinkage and Responsiveness
When sitting down on the Avocado mattress, we noticed sinking further into the surface than on other organic mattresses or latex hybrid mattress competitors at this price. The Avocado green did relatively well in adapting to body movements — the dunlop latex latex foam provides a naturally responsive base — but the entire mattress took significantly longer to recover from movements than comparable organic latex hybrid mattress designs.
This slow recovery creates the “stuck” sensation that frustrates combination sleepers and active sleeping positions types. The thin natural latex latex layer and uniform pocketed coils don’t provide the adaptive rebound found in better-engineered latex hybrids, making the avocado green mattress a particularly poor choice for combination sleepers who shift sleeping positions frequently through the night.
How does it suit different sleeping positions?
Side Sleepers
The Avocado Green Mattress should be satisfactory for side sleepers of lighter body weight who prefer a softer mattress feel. The dunlop latex latex foam provides some cushioning at the shoulders and hips — the primary pressure relief zones for side sleepers — and the pillow top version adds extra surface softness. However, side sleepers of average to heavier weight may find the Avocado green’s pressure relief inadequate, and light sleepers sharing a bed will likely struggle with the motion transfer performance.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers may want to consider alternatives such as the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress in medium firm or firm. The Avocado green does not deliver the targeted lumbar support that back sleepers need from a premium organic latex hybrid mattress, and the softer-than-advertised firmness scale position means back sleepers of average or heavier weight are unlikely to achieve consistent spinal alignment on this Avocado mattress.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers would benefit from a firm mattress that provides meaningful hip and midsection support — and the Avocado Green Mattress does not deliver this reliably. Stomach sleeping on the Avocado green risks hip sinkage and spinal misalignment for all but the lightest stomach sleepers. The Silk & Snow Organic Firm is a far more suitable firm mattress choice for stomach sleepers — and at a significantly lower price.
Combination Sleepers
If sinkage and motion transfer are concerns — and you need better responsiveness and faster recovery from your organic mattresses choice — the Avocado green is not your best option. Combination sleepers will be particularly frustrated by the slow dunlop latex recovery and inconsistent motion transfer dampening of the Avocado green mattress. Better-performing latex hybrids are available at lower price points.
Lightweight Sleepers
Lightweight sleepers should find the Avocado green satisfactory. At lighter body weights, the dunlop latex latex layer provides enough contouring and surface pressure relief for comfortable sleep across most sleeping positions — and the GOTS certified organic wool and GOLS certified organic organic materials make it an appealing eco friendly mattress choice for health-conscious, lightweight sleepers.
Heavy People
Heavier individuals would benefit from a firm mattress with more structural support than the Avocado green offers. The thin natural latex latex foam layer and uniform pocketed coils cannot sustain the support heavier sleeping positions demand over time. We recommend Made in Canada options like the Silk & Snow Organic Firm — a better-value organic latex hybrid mattress that provides more robust support for heavier body weights.
Should You Buy The Avocado Green Mattress?

We would not recommend the Avocado Green Mattress for most Canadian shoppers. Beyond good edge support and its use of genuinely certified organic materials — GOLS certified organic latex, GOTS certified organic cotton, and certified organic wool — this Avocado mattress does not excel in the key performance criteria that matter most: comfort, pressure relief, motion transfer management, breathability, and support across sleeping positions.
The Avocado green mattress does carry real credentials: USDA’s National Organic Program compliance, GOLS certified organic organic dunlop latex, certified organic wool, and a 25 year limited warranty are genuine strengths in the organic mattresses category. The Avocado luxury organic mattress and Avocado vegan mattress variants offer meaningful options within the Avocado green lineup. But at nearly $4,900 CAD for a queen, the Avocado green mattress performance in our testing simply does not justify the premium over far better-value organic mattresses alternatives.
We recommend investing in the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress — a Canadian-made certified organic natural mattress that is not only over $3,500 less for a queen, but also outperformed the Avocado green in pressure relief, cooling, and motion management. For Canadians who want a genuinely eco-friendly mattress built from certified organic materials and free from polyurethane foams, the Silk & Snow Organic is the stronger, smarter choice.
